STS-122 space shuttle Atlantis external tank repair effort

Could the lessons learned from the mistakes of the past finally be permanent at NASA? Take this STS-122 mission for example. For a while, they were talking about launching with the bad connectors and then manually overriding the sensors if needed. Now they are carefully taking each step with care of solving the problem. Hopefully the mistakes of Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia are creating caution in the program and allowing the folks to take all the time to do things right.
