WASHINGTON -- Think getting into college is hard? Try getting into NASA’s 2009 astronaut class. About 3,300 jet-setters filed their applications with NASA before the July 1 deadline, according to the astronaut admissions office.
The space agency will accept 10-15 recruits, with the best odds of joining the corps at a meager 0.45 percent.
NASA will winnow the list of 3,300 to about 100 later this year, with interviews planned between November and January. About 40 finalists then will be selected for a second round of interviews in February and March, with final selections planned for next May.
