I'm reading the book John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon by John Logsdon. It's an excellent account of JFK and Apollo. What I never knew was that in 1963, JFK approached the Soviet Union about combining efforts to send men to the moon. Below is a You Tube clip from his speech at the United Nations where he presents the offer.
The offer was never accepted by the Soviets fearing technological secrets would be leaked to the US. For more I highly recommend the book and sites like this one on the internet. I also have a copy of a 1963 article from Life magazine highlighting how the mission could be done in a joint effort.
As I've mentioned before on this blog, there are many instances where the US space program has helped with international relations:
Finally, this article talks about the possibility of a US/Russia nuclear rocket engine that would be a major part of any effort in deep space.
